Metamod replaces the game.dll of Halflife and thus different plugins can access the Halflife engine alternately.
Metamod is needed for AMX Mod X.
Metamod is automatically activated whenever you activate a mod that requires Metamod.
But you can also activate it manually under Add-Ons.
Important: In Advanced Mode you have to manually adjust liblist.gam after activating Metamod.

Find the entry 

gamedll_linux "dlls/cs_i386.so"

and change it to

:gamedll_linux "addons/metamod/dlls/metamod_i386.so"

.

Then click on Save.
