Metamod replaces the gameinfo.txt of Halflife2, allowing different plugins to access the Halflife2 Engine alternately. Metamod Source is necessary for Sourcemod. If you activate a mod under Add-Ons that requires Metamod, it will be automatically activated as well. However, you can also manually activate it under Add-Ons.
